Introducing the Canadian Dental Care Plan

intro to cdcp

Are you tired of skyrocketing dental costs and limited access to affordable care? The Canadian Dental Care Plan has arrived to revolutionize dental healthcare for Canadians across the country.  With soaring prices and hefty dental bills becoming a common concern, the Canadian Dental Care Plan aims to make quality dental care more accessible to all.

What is the Canadian Dental Care Plan?

The Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) is a government program aimed at offering eligible Canadian residents coverage for various dental services. Its objective is to lower dental care expenses by including costs for check-ups, treatments for oral issues, and surgeries. Targeted at those without dental insurance and with a family income below a set limit, the CDCP provides financial support for dental care, promoting dental health and overall well-being.

What does CDCP cover?

The Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) offers coverage for preventive care like scaling, sealants, and fluoride, diagnostic services such as examinations and X-rays, as well as restorative services like fillings and endodontic treatments. Prosthodontic services like dentures, periodontal services like deep scaling, and oral surgery services like extractions are also covered. Some services may require pre-authorization based on your provider’s recommendations.

Am I eligible?

To qualify for the CDCP, you must be a Canadian resident with no access to dental insurance through employers, pensions, or purchased plans, and have an annual family income of less than $90,000. No co-pays are required for those with family incomes under $70,000.

What’s the coverage amount?

The CDCP offers coverage based on adjusted family net income:

  • Under $70,000: 100% coverage at CDCP-established fees, with no individual contribution.
  • Between $70,000 and $79,999: 60% coverage, with individuals covering 40%.
  • Between $80,000 and $89,999: 40% coverage, with individuals covering 60%.

Individuals may still have out-of-pocket costs for various reasons, so it’s important to inquire about uncovered costs with their dental provider before receiving care.

How to apply for CDCP?

The CDCP will be introduced gradually from late 2023 to 2025. If you qualify for CDCP coverage, you can apply as follows:

  • Seniors aged 70 and above should have received an invitation letter by the end of March 2024. Follow the instructions in the letter to apply over the phone. If you didn’t get this letter, it might be because you haven’t filed your 2022 taxes or your address needs updating (contact CRA to update).
  • If you’re under 70 but eligible, you won’t get a letter. Instead, you can apply online starting May 2024.

Once your application is approved and your eligibility confirmed, Sun Life will mail you a welcome package. This package will include information about the CDCP, your member card, and your coverage start date. Once you have your coverage start date, you can proceed to schedule an appointment with your dentist.
