Services covered by the Canadian Dental Care Plan

The Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) offers coverage for a variety of oral health services, including those aimed at maintaining dental and gum health, preventing and treating oral health issues and diseases.

Examples of covered services, recommended by oral health providers, include:

  1. Preventive services: Scaling (cleaning), Sealants, Fluoride
  2. Diagnostic services: Examinations, X-rays
  3. Restorative services: Fillings
  4. Endodontic services: Root canal treatments
  5. Prosthodontic services: Complete dentures, Partial removable dentures
  6. Periodontal services: Deep scaling
  7. Oral surgery services: Extractions

Certain services may require pre-authorization, which involves getting prior approval based on your provider’s recommendations.

How much will be covered

The CDCP provides coverage for a percentage of eligible expenses based on adjusted net family income. Here’s a breakdown:

Eligibility Requirements

To qualify, you must meet the following criteria:

  1. Be a Canadian resident.
  2. Have no access to dental insurance through:
    • Your employer or a family member’s employer benefits.
    • Dental insurance through your pension or a family member’s pension benefits.
    • Purchased dental insurance or from a family member’s group plan through an insurance or benefits company.
  3. Have an annual family income of less than $90,000.
  4. For those with family incomes under $70,000, there are no co-pays

How to apply for the Canadian Dental Care Plan

Eligible Canadian residents can apply for the program through various channels, including online, over the phone, or in person at a Service Canada office.

To complete the application, you’ll need to provide the following information:

  1. Social Insurance Number
  2. Date of Birth
  3. Full Name
  4. Home and Mailing Address
  5. List of any dental coverage you currently have through government social programs (if applicable)

What happens next

The Government of Canada has chosen Sun Life to manage the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP). Once you apply and your eligibility is verified, Sun Life will send you a welcome package including:

  1. Information about the CDCP
  2. Your membership card
  3. The start date of your coverage
